Our members hope you survived the festive season and wish you all the best for 2009
The last quarter of 2008 saw our Society wind down activities as we held our last meeting for 2008 in November at Combewood homestead at Penrith.

| Ernie was a member of our Society, and was always happy to participate in all activities, as well as a virtual fund of information and knowledge on all
things St Marys. Ernie passed away at the end of October in his 90’s and his passing will be all the more mourned by our members who will miss him.
Our thoughts go out to his family and many friends. Ernie was a member of the St Marys Rural Fire Brigade for many years lived with his family in
Saddington Street, St Marys. He died at home in Collins Street, St Marys, the home he shared with his son Ernie Jnr. Photo of Ernie taken by Lyn Forde |

Spring Festival time finally arrived on the 11th October with the parade and street fair not hampered by the postponement. As usual, members of the public came to join in and everything went well. The Bennett wagon and beautiful Clydesdale horses stole the show and our members were happy to “hitch up their skirts” for a ride, along with members of the Bennett family who attended the festivities. After the parade, the Bennett family members were taken on a tour of “Bronte” the old family home in Gidley Street and our Society hosted a lunch for them at our headquarters at the “Chambers” building in Mamre Road.

On the 15th November 2008, Lyn Forde our President, and member Annette Kelly attended a book launching on behalf of the Society at Ebeneza Church. The book was researched and written by Victor King, son of the late Brian King of St Marys and Mayor of Penrith on several occasions. Victor launched the book on his family’s convict ancestor called – “Jacklin: a convict’s story” as a precursor to the bi-centenary celebrations this year of Ebeneza Church. William Jacklin was a founder of the church and most of the research in the book centres on the Hawkesbury area where much of the opposition to the officers of the Rum Corps was situated. Victor can be contacted through his website www.victorking.com.au

Nanna’s Recipes – Our Secretary, Carol Volkiene was happy to share two of her Grandmother’s recipes as below:-
Busy Day Pudding:
2 tablespoons golden syrup
2 tablespoons butter
¾ cup milk
½ teaspoon bi-carb soda
1 ½ cups self raising flour
Method: Put syrup and butter into steamer, melt on gentle heat and add milk into which soda has been dissolved, mix in flour, beat until light and well mixed, cover and steam 1 to 1 ¼ hours. Serve with cream or custard (this is really nice says Carol)
Economical Ice-cream
470 g (15oz) can evaporated milk
1 ½ teaspoons gelatine
½ cup boiling water
1 cup cold water
1 cup non-fat milk powder
½ cup sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
Method: Dissolve gelatine in boiling water. Add cold water, pour into large bowl of electric mixer. Add evaporated milk (it doesn’t need to be chilled), milk powder and sugar. Beat until combined and free from lumps. Freeze until firm. Remove from freezer and allow to stand until softened slightly. Empty into chilled mixing bowl, mash down with potato masher. Beat at high speed till light and fluffy and doubled in bulk, add vanilla, put into trays and freeze.
